Austin's late interception seals win over Case Western Reserve

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Freshman defensive back Lamont Austin's (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) interception and 71-yard return with under 20 seconds left in regulation sealed Westminster College's 17-14 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over previously unbeaten Case Western Reserve University under the lights of Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium Saturday night.

Westminster ran its record to 6-1 with the win. The Titans are now 9-3 in home night games under head coach Scott Benzel. Case Western Reserve, which was receiving votes in last week's D3football.com Top 25, fell to 6-1.

Austin's jumped Alex Fromberg's sideline pass to Dylan Cave to secure the game-sealing interception. It was Austin's second interception this year. He also finished with a season-high seven tackles (7 solo).

Scoreless after a quarter, Case Western Reserve's Dominic Sais blocked sophomore Craig Sonson Jr.'s (Pittsburgh, Pa., Montour) 4th-and-16 punt with just over three minutes remaining, which Joseph Swarm recovered and returned 32 yards for a Spartans' touchdown. Westminster followed with an 11-play, 74-yard drive, capped by freshman quarterback Sean O'Shea's (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) three-yard scoring run to tie the game at 7-7.

Junior quarterback Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) ran three times for 18 yards and completed 6-of-8 passes for 41 yards in the second quarter.

Graduate student running back Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla., Walter L. Sickles) finished off a 13-play, 92-yard drive in the third, scoring on a 20-yard rush to give Westminster a 14-7 advantage. It was Gomes' fifth rushing touchdown this season and 24th of his career. On the next drive, Case Western Reserve evened the score 14-14 when Fromberg hit Ethan Dahlem for an 11-yard touchdown. It was Dahlem's eighth receiving score this year.

Following Gabriel Petrozzi's missed 39-yard field goal attempt with under 10 minutes left in regulation, Westminster's freshman kicker, Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere), drilled a 21-yard field goal with just over seven to play to give the Titans a 17-14 lead. On the Spartans' final drive, Fromberg completed 9-of-10 pass attempts and rushed for six yards on a fourth-and-one from the Titans' 47-yard line before the Austin interception.

McGowan was 17-of-21 passing for 153 yards. He threw his first interception of the season in the first quarter. Gomes ran 21 times for 87 yards and added three catches for 18 yards. Senior wide receiver Jalen Washington (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) hauled in five passes for 90 yards.

Westminster rolled up 314 yards of total offense and had over 35 minutes time of possession.

The Westminster defense limited Case Western Reserve to just 25 net rushing yards. Junior linebacker Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) finished with 11 tackles (9 solo) and a tackle for loss while senior defensive lineman Jean Garry Joseph (North Miami, Fla., Ebenezer Christian) added seven tackles (6 solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss. Freshman linebacker Ricky Cooper (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Port St. Lucie) racked up five tackles (4 solo) and 2.0 tackles for loss.

Senior defensive back Brice Butler (Farrell, Pa., Farrell) intercepted Fromberg's third-and-seven pass in the endzone midway through the first quarter. It was his second interception this season and 14th of his career.
