Westminster falls at No. 17 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH--The Westminster College football program suffered a 45-20 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) setback at No. 17 Carnegie Mellon University Saturday afternoon at Richard M Lackner Field inside Gesling Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon improved to 7-1 while Westminster fell to 6-2.

Carnegie Mellon raced out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and led 31-0 at halftime. Jacob Franze's 27-yard interception returned for a touchdown with under a minute left in the second quarter closed out the first half scoring.

Trailing 38-0 with five minutes to go in the third, freshman Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) returned a Carnegie Mellon kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. It was his fourth special teams' touchdown this season. The kickoff return for a score was Westminster's first since Luca Botti's 84-yard touchdown in a 66-14 win over Waynesburg University on Oct. 16, 2021.

Down 45-7 with just over eight minutes left in the fourth, senior quarterback Billy Levak (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia) connected with senior wide receiver Jalen Washington (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) on a 28-yard scoring pass. Levak hooked up with senior wide receiver Ethan Burford (Shippenville, Pa., Clarion) on a 10-yard score with just over a minute remaining in regulation. It was Burford's first career touchdown.

Carnegie Mellon outgained Westminster 440-230 and had a 265-52 edge in rushing yards.

Junior quarterback Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) completed 13-of-18 passes for 89 yards. Levak was 7-of-10 for 89 yards. Washington had 54 yards on five catches.

Junior linebacker Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) and freshman linebacker Ricky Cooper (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Port St. Lucie) had eight tackles apiece. Freshman defensive lineman Wes Donner (Bastrop, Texas, Manor) finished with six stops.
