WARREN, Ohio--The Westminster College men are in fifth place after Monday's opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Golf Championships.

The PAC's 36-hole fall event is being hosted by the Avalon Golf & Country Club in Warren, Ohio Monday and Tuesday. The men are playing a pair of rounds at Avalon Lakes in Warren.

Allegheny College, last year's champion, leads the nine-team field with a seven-over 295. Washington & Jefferson College is in second place (304) and is followed by Geneva College in third (307). Westminster is 20 strokes off the lead with a team score of 315.

Allegheny's Carter Hassenplug, the two-time defending PAC Player of the Year, paces the 45-player event with a five-under 67. W&J's Luke Melisko is second with a three-under 69.

Sophomore Tyler Hager (Lehighton, Pa., Palmerton) is tied with Allegheny's Zach Melzar for seventh after carding a four-over 76. Senior Ellian Ascencio (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) is in a three-way tie for 14th with a six-over 78 while senior Gavin Batdorff (Berlin Center, Ohio, South Range) is one of five players tied for 17th with a seven-over 79. Senior Joe Trudeau (Ann Arbor, Mich., Skyline) and graduate student Kai Haseyama (Encinitas, Calif., San Dieguito Academy) are in a four-way tie for 28th after posting rounds of 82.

This year's PAC Championships features a 72-hole stroke play event, beginning with 36 holes played this fall and another 36 holes played Friday-Saturday, April 25-26 at Mill Creek Metroparks and the Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman, Ohio. The men will play two rounds on the South Course in April. Five golfers will make up a team, with the lowest four scores per round from the designated five-player squad used in team score compilation.

The combined 72-hole team totals determine PAC team champions and winners of the league's automatic-qualifying bids to the NCAA Division III Championships.
