Titans edged at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 62-52 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Allegheny College Wednesday evening at James H. Mullen, Jr. Arena inside the David V. Wise Center. 

Allegheny, winners of four straight and seven of its last eight, improved to 11-9 overall and 10-5 in PAC action. Westminster fell to 11-9 overall and 9-7 in the league.

Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) and senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) had double-doubles for the Titans. Murrio finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds and added four assists and three steals. Fitzpatrick posted 10 points and 12 rebounds, both season highs. It was her first double-double of the season and third of her career. Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) matched her career high with 13 points. 

Jess Bickert led three Allegheny players in double figures with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. She went 7-of-13 from the field and made five of her seven attempted three-point field goals. Emily Lauer added 15 points and eight rebounds Sarah Santicola chipped in with an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Allegheny went into the second quarter up two, 12-10. Lauer and Bickart scored six points apiece in the first to lead the Gators. Murrio and sophomore Gracie Schill (Rootstown, Ohio, Akron Hoban) each had four first quarter points for the Titans.

Allegheny forged a 32-22 second quarter lead with two and half minutes remaining in the half and led by six, 32-26, at halftime. Bickert totaled 14 first half points for Allegheny, going 5-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from three-point range. Murrio finished the first half with 11 points and five rebounds while Hess finished with five second quarter points. Allegheny had a 29-23 first half advantage in rebounds, including 10 offensive boards.

Westminster got off to a hot start in the third. The Titans outscored Allegheny 8-2 early and freshman Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) evened the game at 34 with just over six and a half minutes to go in the period. Allegheny's Branygan Bianchin drilled a three-pointer with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter to cap a 10-2 run and push the Gators' lead to eight, 44-36. Allegheny led 46-40 after three. 

The Gators extended their fourth quarter lead to 10, 56-46, with just under five minutes left in regulation. Lauer scored eight points during the Gators' fourth quarter run.

Westminster shot 33.8 percent (23-68) from the floor and went 6-of-11 (.545) from the free throw line. The Titans finished 0-9 from three-point field goal range. Allegheny shot 32.4 percent (22-68) from the field and knocked down 6-of-17 (.353) of its three-point field goal attempts. The Gators went 12-of-16 (.750) from the free throw line.

Westminster had a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint while Allegheny finished with a 10-4 edge in second chance points. The Gators outrebounded the Titans 50-41. 

Westminster will host Chatham University Saturday. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
