Westminster women upended by Chatham

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team was dealt a 71-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by Chatham University at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. 

Chatham, now winners of four-straight games, improved to 19-3 overall and 15-2 in the PAC. The Cougars have won four straight match-ups with the Titans. Westminster fell to 11-10 overall and 9-8 in the league with Saturday's loss.

Fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She added a game-high eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Freshman Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) scored a career-high 15 points in a season-high 28 reserve minutes. She went 4-of-9 from the floor and knocked down four of her six attempted three-pointers. Arison added three rebounds, five assists and a steal. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) scored seven points and added three rebounds, four assists and two steals. 

Four players scored in double figures for Chatham. Charjae Brock totaled 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals while Ashlie Louden had 12 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Alyssa Laukus and Emily Durkee chipped in with 10 points and four rebounds apiece. 

Chatham jumped out to a 13-5 lead five minutes into the first quarter, but Westminster evened the score at 22 heading into the second. The Titans went up five, 32-27, on a layup by senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) with just over six minutes left in the half. Arison drilled back-to-back three-pointers during the stretch. The Cougars, fueled by a 6-0 scoring run, took a 33-32 lead on a Louden layup with three and a half minutes left in the second period and went up by as many as six, 42-36, before heading into intermission sporting a 42-38 lead. 

Brock scored 11 of her 12 points in the first half on 4-of-6 shooting. Zelimar Rodriguez scored all eight of her points on Saturday in the first half. Twelve of Arison's 15 were scored in the first 20 minutes. 

Chatham outscored Westminster 11-5 early in the third to stretch its lead to 10, 53-43, just after the media timeout. The Cougars outscored the Titans by a 16-9 margin and went into the fourth quarter leading by 11, 58-47.

Chatham did not allow its fourth quarter advantage to dip into single digits, stretching its lead to as many as 16, 71-55, with just over two minutes left in regulation. 

Westminster shot 33.9 percent from the floor (21-62) and made a season-high eight three-point field goals. Westminster outrebounded Chatham 43-38 but committed a season-high 28 turnovers in the loss. The Cougars outscored the Titans 28-18 in the paint. 

Westminster will host Franciscan University Wednesday. Tipoff at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
