Titans fall in pivotal PAC matchup

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 66-58 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday evening. 

Grove City improved to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in league action while Westminster fell to 10-8 overall and 8-6 in the PAC. 

Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) led Westminster with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. Wednesday was her first collegiate double-double. Hess went 6-of-9 from the floor. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) added 13 points and three assists. Fifth-year senior Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with nine points, four rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals and senior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK) totaled nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. 

Mara Polczynski led three Grove City players in double figures, finishing with a career-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. She went 3-of-11 from the floor but knocked down nine of 10 attempted free throws, including a 5-for-6 effort from the line in the fourth quarter. Kat Goetz totaled 16 points and seven rebounds while Reese Hasley added 11 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals. 

Grove City whittled away an early 8-2 Westminster lead and following a three-point play by Hasley with six seconds to go in the first, the Wolverines went into the second up one, 13-12. A 7-2 start to the second for Grove City pushed its lead to six, 20-14, with two minutes elapsed in the quarter. Murrio split a pair of free throws with just over two minutes left before the half to cut the lead to 29-28. Polczynski drilled a pair of free throws before Emily Wentworth scored in the paint with under a minute remaining in the quarter that gave the Wolverines a five-point lead, 33-28, going into the break.

Fueled by an 11-5 run to start the third, Westminster jumped ahead 39-38 on a Hergenrother layup with four a half minutes left in the period. She had five points during the scoring spurt. The Titans held Grove City scoreless for 5:25 and extended their lead to 10, 48-38, on Murrio's layup with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. Westminster outscored Grove City 20-9 in the third and went into the fourth up 48-42. 

Grove City used a 12-0 run between the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to go up by two, 50-48, with 7:50 left in regulation. Goetz had six points during the stretch. Condoleon evened the score at 50 with 6:23 to go before Polczynski scored seven-straight points to push Grove City ahead by five, 57-52, with just over three minutes to play. Hess' jumper with a half minute remaining cut Grove City's lead to four, 62-58, but the Wolverines finished 4-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the eight-point league win. 

Westminster shot 36.9 percent (24-65) from the floor and went 4-of-18 (.222) from three-point field goal range. The Titans went just 6-of-13 (.462) from the free throw line. Grove City finished shooting 36.7 percent (22-60) from the field and hit six of its 20 (.300) three-point attempts. The Wolverines sunk 16 of their 18 (.889) attempted free throws. 

Grove City finished with a commanding 48-32 rebounding advantage. The Wolverines outscored the Titans 32-30 in the paint and finished with a 14-11 edge in bench scoring. 

Westminster will travel to Thiel College Saturday. Tipoff at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
