Four finish in double figures, Titans earn lopsided win over Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Four players finished in double figures to lead the Westminster College men's basketball team to a 79-62 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over rival Grove City College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Wednesday night.

Westminster evened its overall record at 9-9 while improving to 7-7 in PAC play. Grove City fell to 9-9 overall and 6-8 in the league with the loss. Wednesday's win was the largest by Westminster in the series since Feb. 19, 2020, a 74-52 win in New Wilmington.

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) finished with a game-high 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting. He added five rebounds and three assists. Jones has scored 20 or more points eight times this season. Sophomore Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) added 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting while adding six rebounds. Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) registered a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double, his third of the year. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) chipped in with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range.

Chase Yarberough led Grove City with 17 points. Mike Christenson had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Wolverines.

Grove City led throughout most of the first half, stretching its lead to as many as 11, 24-13, with just under nine minutes to go. Westminster put together a 13-3 run to pull to within one, 27-26, on a Jones layup with just over three remaining in the half. Grove City carried a 36-33 lead into the break. Jones scored 12 of his 24 in the first half while Christenson led the Wolverines with nine points and five rebounds.

Down by two, 48-46, DePietro ignited an 11-1 run with a bucket six minutes into the second and helped the Titans carve out a 57-49 lead with 10:35 remaining in the half. Jones had six points during the run. Westminster's second half lead swelled to as many as 21, 79-58, with just over a minute to go.

Westminster finished shooting 49.2 percent (32-65) from the floor and tied its season high with eight made three-point field goals (8-19). The Titans combined to go 7-of-8 from the free throw line, their lowest number of attempts since going 0-of-3 at Youngstown State Dec. 8, 2022.

Grove City edged Westminster on the glass, 39-36, and finished with a 13-4 advantage in bench scoring. The Titans outscored the Wolverines 42-32 in the paint and flipped 14 Grove City turnovers into 16 points.

Westminster will travel to Thiel College Saturday. Tipoff at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
