Titans lose on road to Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team was dealt a 77-64 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by Thiel College Saturday afternoon at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.

Thiel improved to 7-13 overall and 6-9 in the PAC with Saturday's win. Westminster fell to 9-10 overall and 7-8 in the league. The Titans are now 1-7 in road conference games this year.

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) and senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) each had double-doubles. Jones finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Clark totaled 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) added 12 points and a pair of assists. 

Thiel finished with five players in double figures. Elijah Harden fired in 16 points and added four rebounds and six assists. Ten players scored for Thiel. 

Westminster trailed by seven, 45-38, at halftime. Jones had nine points and five rebounds while Clark added eight points and four boards in the first half. Harden led all scorers with 12 first half points. The Titans went 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes while the Tomcats shot 50.0 percent (21-42) from the floor and had a 24-18 advantage on the glass. 

An 11-2 start to open the second half gave Westminster a two-point lead, 49-47, on Clark's layup three minutes into the half. Sophomore Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) stretched the Titans' lead to five, 57-52, after his made jumper with 12:27 remaining. Thiel held Westminster scoreless for close to six minutes and went up by six, 63-57, on a Jonah Biggers' jumper with just under seven minutes to play. 

Leone's layup with just over five minutes left trimmed Thiel's lead to three, 65-62. The Titans were held scoreless over the next four minutes as the Tomcats' lead ballooned to as many 15.

Westminster shot 36.5 percent (23-63) from the floor and finished 14-of-19 (.737) from the free throw line. Thiel shot 41.6 percent (32-77) from the field and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line. The Tomcats finished with a 54-41 edge in rebounding, including a 21-12 lead on the offensive boards. The Tomcats also finished with a 25-10 advantage in second chance points and outscored the Westminster reserves 32-11. 

Westminster will travel to Allegheny College Wednesday. Tipoff at the David V. Wise Center in Meadville is scheduled for 8 p.m.
