Westminster edged at Saint Vincent in semifinals

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse team fell to Saint Vincent College in the semifinal round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament 9-7 Wednesday evening.

Westminster finished its season 10-7 overall. It is the third time in program history the Titans have recorded 10 wins in a season.

Saint Vincent improved to 15-2 and will face the winner of tonight's matchup between top-seeded Grove City College and No. 4 Allegheny College Saturday in the league's title match.

Sophomore midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va. | Douglas S. Freeman) led with three goals and had four ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior attack Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md. | Loyola Blakefield) tallied two goals. Senior attack Nick Hubner (Pittsburgh, Pa. | Plum) had one goal and added one ground ball and one caused turnover while freshman attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa. | Seneca Valley) had one goal. Senior midfielder Boyd Foster (Lincoln, R.I. | Lincoln) and junior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y. | Ithaca) each had one assist.

Graduate student long stick midfielder Mike Roman (Norristown, Pa. | Germantown Academy) and freshman defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y. | Huntington) both had five ground balls.

Junior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa. | Bethel Park), sophomore defender Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah | Wasatch) and senior attack Ryan Greer (Cranberry Township, Pa. | Seneca Valley) each had two caused turnovers.

Junior goalkeeper Bradley Green (Landisville, Pa. | Hempfield) made nine saves and had two ground balls.

Junior Dino Mario D'Alesio II (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) went 9-of-18 on faceoffs and had one ground ball.

The Titans trailed the Bearcats 2-0 at the end of the first. Jones started the scoring for Westminster early in the second period to make it a 2-1 game. Saint Vincent would score two more before the half to make the score 4-1.

Saint Vincent started the third period with an early goal and added another with five minutes left in the third. Jones started the second half scoring for the Titans off an assist from Waight as the third period ended with a score of 5-3. There was an even amount of goals scored in the fourth period, 4-4, with Sentz, Jones, Page, and Hubner all scoring unassisted. Unfortunately it was not enough as the final score would be 9-7 in favor of Saint Vincent.

Westminster outshot Saint Vincent 41-34, but the Bearcats edged the Titans 24-18 in shots on goal and each team went 9-for-9 in faceoffs.
