Titans complete sweep of W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team earned a pair of victories Thursday afternoon against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College. The Titans took game one, 7-0, before claiming an 11-3 (5 inn.) win in game two. 

Westminster improved to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in PAC play. The Titans have now won seven-straight games. W&J fell to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the the league. 

Westminster will travel to Meadville Sunday to take on Allegheny College. The first pitch of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Westminster 7, W&J 0
In the circle, graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio | East Liverpool) improved to 5-2 this season with the complete-game shutout. She allowed six hits and struck out four. The Titans totaled 12 hits in the opener, including four extra base hits. Senior shortstop Alexis Yates (Oakdale, Pa. | South Fayette) went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Her 23 runs scored lead the PAC. Senior first baseman Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa.  Laurel) was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. She is hitting .490 this season. Her 28 RBIs currently lead the league. Senior outfielder Ashley Wire (Poland, Ohio | Poland Seminary) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, three runs scored a pair of stolen bases while senior center fielder Brooke Atkins (New Castle, Pa. | Laurel) finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. 

Westminster, leading 1-0 after two, extended its lead to 3-0 in the third on Latess' two-run home run. It was her fourth home run of the season. Back-to-back run-producing hits by Atkins and Wire in the fourth pushed the Titans' lead to 6-0. Junior catcher Alyssa Stock (New Brighton, Pa. | New Brighton) added the final run in the sixth with an RBI single. 

The Titans stranded nine runners on base in the game one win. 

Game 2: Westminster 11, W&J 3 (5 inn.)
An RBI groundout in the top of the first gave W&J a quick 1-0 lead in game two. Westminster scored its first run in the nightcap on an error before Atkins' two-out, two-run double gave the Titans a 3-2 lead. Sophomore third baseman Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa. | Norwin) smacked a two-run triple in the bottom of the third keyed the six-run frame. Junior designated player Riley Lewis (Clinton, Pa. | Hopewell), Yates and Wire added run-producing hits in the inning. 

Up 9-2, Westminster added a pair of runs in the fifth to secure the run-rule win. 

Junior Elizabeth Malczak (Grove City, Pa. | Grove City) improved to 6-1 this season in the circle after allowing three runs (3 earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings. 

Westminster finished with 12 hits in the nightcap, including four for extra bases. 

Lokay went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Wire went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Latess and Lewis both had a pair of base hits.
