Westminster clipped at Chatham

PITTSBURGH--The Westminster College women's basketball squad suffered a 69-51 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Chatham University Saturday afternoon. 

Chatham, winners of seven straight, improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the PAC. The Cougars are 5-0 at its Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) this season. Westminster fell to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Senior Katie Fitzpatrick (Cumberland Center, Maine, Greely) knocked down a jumper with just over five minutes elapsed to give Westminster an early 9-2 lead. The Titans carried a 15-13 lead into the second. Junior Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) finished with five first quarter points while fifth-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) added four. 

Hannah Chenault pushed Chatham's lead to nine, 35-26, after scoring with under one minute to go in the half, but sophomore Gracie Schill (Rootstown, Ohio, Akron Hoban) beat the buzzer with a three-point field goal that cut Westminster's deficit to six, 35-29, going into halftime. Chatham outscored Westminster 22-11 in the second quarter. The Cougars made 4-of-11 three-point field goals in the first half while the Titans were limited to 1-of-11 from long range through the first 20 minutes of action. 

Schill finished with 10 first half points, scoring eight in the second quarter. 

Chatham upped its lead to 10, 47-37, after three, holding Westminster scoreless over the final three minutes of the quarter. Charjae Brock had five third quarter points for the Cougars.

Murrio split a pair of free throws with 7:40 to go that trimmed Chatham's lead to 12, 54-42, but the Cougars used an 8-0 scoring run over the next three minutes to stretch its lead to 20, 62-42. Chatham outscored Westminster 22-14 in the fourth en route to the 18-point win.

Murrio, Hess and Schill all scored in double figures. Murrio had 12 points, three rebounds and three assists while Hess added 11 points and a pair of rebounds. Schill finished with 10 points. Graduate student Camden Hergenrother (Salem, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) totaled six points, five rebounds and five assists. Senior Caitlyn Condoleon (Warren, Ohio, Warren JFK) had a career-high nine rebounds. Fifth-year Lindsay Bell (Youngstown, Ohio, Ursuline) chipped in with six rebounds. 

Westminster shot 38.0 percent from the field but converted just one of its 13 three-point attempts. Chatham made nine of its 26 three-point attempts. The Titans shot 80.0 percent (12-15) from the free throw line. The Cougars' bench outscored the Titans 36-18. 

Westminster will travel to Franciscan University on Saturday, December 16. Tipoff at Finnegan Fieldhouse is scheduled for 1 p.m.
