Titans fall at home to Carnegie Mellon in conference tilt

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College football program was dealt a 21-7 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss by visiting Carnegie Mellon Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium. 

Westminster fell to 5-4 with the setback. Carnegie Mellon ran its record to 8-1. 

Sophomore Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) completed 28-of-54 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown. The 28 completions and 228 yards passing were career highs. Junior Jalen Washington (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) hauled in a career-high eight catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) caught seven passes for 41 yards while sophomore Jalen Royal-Eiland (Youngstown, Ohio, Mineral Ridge) had two catches for 36 yards. 

Senior Ryan Gomes (Tampa, Fla., Walter L. Sickles) finished with eight carries for eight yards and six catches for 51 yards.

Carnegie Mellon outgained Westminster 240-212 in total offense. The Titans finished with 13 first downs to the Tartans' 12. 

The scoreless first quarter featured just one first down and a combined 26 yards of offense. The teams also combined to punt eight times in the first 15 minutes. 

Carnegie Mellon struck with just over a minute to go in the second. Ben Miller connected on a 1-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Voiland to cap an eight-play, 54-yard drive. The Tartans entered the break leading 7-0. 

Voiland had a 39-yard punt return after Westminster's three-and-out to start the third and Will Squibb scored from six yards out with three minutes and 17 seconds gone in the period to push the Tartans' lead to 14-0. Westminster's 10-play, 31-yard drive was snuffed out on McGowan's incompletion to Washington at the Carnegie Mellon 31-yard line. On the ensuing drive, Mills hooked up with Ethan Riefer on a 14-yard score to push the visitor's lead to 21-0 with 5:17 left in the third. 

With just under 11 minutes to play in regulation, McGowan connected with Washington on a 10-yard touchdown to cut Carnegie Mellon's lead to 21-7. the score capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive that consumed almost six minutes. After an exchange of punts, McGowan completed a 30-yard pass to Royal-Eiland that set up the Titans at the Carnegie Mellon 26-yard line with just over six minutes remaining. A pair of false starts scuttled the drive at the Carnegie Mellon 21-yard line.

Sophomore Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) racked up a game-high 10 tackles (4 solo). It was his fifth game this year with 10 or more tackles. Freshman Matthew Petruzzi (Allison Park, Pa., Central Catholic) had seven tackles (2 solo) and 1.5 tackles for loss while senior Corte Williams (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) finished with six tackles (4 solo). Junior Evan Lewis (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) had three tackles (2 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. 

Freshman Craig Sonson Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa. , Montour) averaged 40.4 yards on 10 punts. He had a career-long 56-yard punt in the first quarter. 

Tre Vasiliadis totaled 23 carries for 64 yards for Carnegie Mellon. Mills completed 12-of-20 passes for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns while rushing five times for 41 yards. 

Westminster will conclude its regular season next Saturday against longtime rival Geneva. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
