Westminster tops Penn State Shenango

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team cruised to an 86-70 victory over Penn State Shenango during day two of the Buzz Ridl Classic Saturday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster improved its record to 1-1 and Penn State Shenango fell to 0-2. 

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) finished with 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. He also went 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Jones added six rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) totaled 17 points, six reboounds and six assists. He went 6-of-9 from the floor and was 5-of-5 at the free throw line. Sophomores Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds and three blocks while sophomore Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) had 13 points.

D'Montez Owens led Penn State Shenango with 16 points and five rebounds.

Westminster outscored Penn State Shenango 44-28 in the paint and turned 18 Shenango turnovers into 21 points. The Titans shot 47.5 percent (29-61) from the floor.

Tied at 10-10, Westminster put together an 11-0 scoring run to take a 21-10 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the opening half. An 16-7 run late in the first half slashed Westminster's lead to just two, 37-35, after the Titans had led by as many as 11. Weir closed out the half with a three-point play to give the Titans a five-point advantage (40-35) going into the half. 

Malik Davis' three-pointer trimmed Westminster's lead to just one, 45-44, with under 16 minutes to play. Leone capped a 10-0 Westminster run to stretch the lead to a dozen, 64-52, with 7:29 to go. The Titans lead swelled to 18 late before securing the 16-point win. 

Westminster opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
