Westminster drops league opener at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team dropped a 106-82 decision to Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium to open its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule.

W&J evened its record at 2-2 overall while Westminster fell to 1-2.

Sophomore Quincy Jones (Youngstown, Ohio, Chaney) led all scorers with 16 first half points, going 5-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Sophomore Trey DePietro's (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) layup with 13:35 left in the first half trimmed the Presidents' lead to two, 15-13, but W&J follow up with a 10-0 scoring spurt that stretched its lead to 12. Westminster went into the break trailing 49-37.

Senior Andrew Clark (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) knocked down a pair of free throws with 14:32 to play to get the visitors back to within 12, 64-52, but that would be the closest the Titans would get. W&J's second half lead swelled to as many as 26, 99-73, with just under four minutes to go.

Jones paced four Westminster players in double figures Wednesday, finishing 8-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free throw line to score a career-high 22 points. He added eight rebounds. Sophomore Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) added 15 points and four rebounds while DePietro and senior Reese Leone (Beloit, Ohio, West Branch) scored 10 points each. DePietro had five rebounds and Leone added six assists.

Westminster shot 41.7 percent from the field. The Titans went 1-of-11 (.091) from three-point range, its first game held to a single three-point field goal since finishing 1-of-15 in a 73-58 home loss to Saint Vincent last January. W&J shot 50.6 percent from the floor and converted seven of its 21 three-point tries (.333). W&J had 21 steals and turned 27 Westminster turnovers into 30 points.

Alex Acosta had a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead five double-figure scorers for W&J.

Westminster travels to Saint Vincent Saturday. Tipoff inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
