NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster women's lacrosse team overcame an early 5-1 deficit to win 15-7 in its home opener against non-conference foe Heidelberg on Wednesday.
"First of all, it was a great team win," said head coach
Bethany Snider. "Overall, everyone brought their game today. As we know, lacrosse is a game where you have to have the energy and go on runs. The girls did just that. We won a lot of draw controls and I think that obviously leads to offensive possessions. Our defense played sound, created a lot of turnovers, and we played well as a team and had a lot of chemistry tonight. I think that paid off in the long run."
Titan junior
Emiley Kushner (Cecil, PA / Canon-McMillan) scored the first goal of the game, however, Heidelberg (0-2) went ahead 5-1 with three minutes left in the first quarter. Westminster (1-1) answered with seven-straight goals to lead 8-5 with two minutes remaining in the first half. The Titans outscored the Student Princes 7-2 for the remainder of the contest.
Westminster sophomore
Nina Rascona (Somerset, PA / Somerset Area) totaled a career- and game-high five points, including three goals and two assists – both firsts of her collegiate career. Kushner and junior
Stephanie Cimini (Mars, PA / Mars Area) led the Titans in goals with four apiece (a career-high for Kushner). Junior
Jaden Domaratz (Springdale, PA / Springdale) registered a career-high three goals, while sophomore
Samantha Reed (Zionsville, PA / Emmaus) added a goal. Cimini (Mars, PA / Mars Area) also had game-highs in draw controls (8, tied a career-high) and caused turnovers (career-best 7), to go along with a team-best nine ground balls.
Titan senior goalkeeper
Emma Bradley (South Fayette, PA / South Fayette) earned the win in 30 minutes of work, collecting three saves. First-year
Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) had seven saves and only allowed one goal in the second half.
The Titans are back on the field Wednesday, March 16 at Medaille with a 5 p.m. start.
