Baseball: Titans Split Doubleheader Against Suffolk

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Westminster baseball team split its doubleheader against Suffolk Tuesday night. The Titans won game one, 12-3, and then lost, 14-3, in game two.

"Tim had a real nice outing today," said head coach Pat Riley. "He faced a heavy lefty lineup and showed to be pretty effective against them. The second game wasn't the result we wanted, but we saw some good things throughout the day."

In game one, Westminster (2-2) gained the early momentum and never looked back as it scored seven runs in the first inning. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Titans scored five more runs to secure the victory.

In game two, sophomore Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) launched his first-career homerun over left field. In the seventh inning, first-year Marco Gambino (Pittsburgh, PA / Thomas Jefferson) picked up his first-career hit and run-batted-in with a single to right field.

The Titans were led by sophomore Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley), who went 2-for-3 in game one with a team-high two runs-batted in. First-year Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, PA / Shaler) collected two hits and his first-career run-batted-in. In game two, Randza went 3-for-3, while first-year Chris Davis (San Francisco, CA / Stuart Hall) tallied his first-career hit.

On the mound, sophomore Timothy Lewis (Southwest Harbor, ME / Wilmington Area) earned the win with a career- and game-best four strikeouts in game one. In relief innings, first-year Dwight Parker (Youngstown, OH / Liberty) registered a career-high three strikeouts. During game two, first-year Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, PA / Lincoln) made his first collegiate start and tallied three strikeouts.

"A lot of different guys got opportunities, which is always important early in the season," said Riley.

Westminster is back in action Wednesday, March 16 as they take on Keene State at 6 p.m.
