MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Westminster baseball team won, 14-3, in the opening game of its Ripken Spring Training Experience against Wells College Monday afternoon.
Â
"We did a good job competing on the mound and executing our game plan," said head coach Pat Riley. "Offensively, we battled and capitalized at some key moments."
Â
In the top of the fourth with a tied game (3-3), Westminster (1-1) capitalized off an error from Wells (3-7) to go ahead by three runs. The Titans continued to ride the momentum as they drove in two runs in the sixth, followed by a single from senior
Brandon Cooper (Oakdale, PA / West Allegheny) in left-center that brought in two more runs during the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Titans were led by Cooper, who tallied a game-high three hits along with a career- and game- best five runs with two runs-batted-in. Sophomore
Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley) went 2-for-4 with a career- and game-high four runs-batted-in, while being walked once. Senior
Matt Costello (New Castle, PA / Union Area) went 2-for-5 and knocked in a run as well.
Â
On the mound, junior
Frankie Manios (Warren, OH / Howland) commanded the game as he registered a career- and game-best four strikeouts and earned his first win of the season. In relief innings, senior
Logan Minch (Grove City, PA / Grove City Area) tallied three strikeouts to secure the victory and earn the save.
Â
"Frankie did a real nice job settling in after the first inning," said Riley. "He's a guy that wants the ball and embraces being out there. It was a good performance and one we were hoping to see."
Â
The Titans return to the field Tuesday, March 15 as they compete against Suffolk in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
