NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Westminster College women's swimming & diving team commenced the new campaign with a pair of convincing wins.
Coach Pat Smith's Titans (2-0) triumphed over Penn State-Behrend (161-109) and Washington & Jefferson College (180-55).
In Westminster's win over PSU-Behrend, junior Olivia Herman (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg High) swept the 100- (1:16.98) and 200-yard (2:46.27) breaststroke events; sophomore Christina Loewe (Austin, Texas/Veritas Academy) swept the 100- (1:04.85) and 200-yard (2:30.45) butterfly events and also triumphed in the 200-yard IM (2:26.49), and graduate student Megan Routch (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny High) swept the 500- (5:49.88) and 1000-yard (12:05.78) freestyle. Other individual Westminster winners against Behrend included sophomore Sara MacMurdo (Pittsburgh/Carlynton High), 50-yard free (25.98), and first-year Alexa Young (Pittsburgh/Mount Lebanon High) in the 1-meter dive (132.95 points).
The 200-yard medley relay foursome – first-year Natalie Carlantonio (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock High), Herman, Loewe and MacMurdo – won with a 2:00.13 collective clocking, as did the 200-yard free-relay quartet – Routch, Carlantonio, junior Lauren Tanis (Reading, Pa./Fleetwood High), and MacMurdo – in a time of 1:47.91.
In the victory over W&J, Westminster winners included Loewe, 100- (1:04.93) and 200-yard (2:20.63) backstroke and 100-yard 'fly (1:09.19); Herman, 200-yard freestyle (2:11.47) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:45.28); MacMurdo, 50- (26.39) and 100-yard (58.45) 'free; sophomore Amber Krebs (Whitewater, Wisc./Whitewater High), who swept the 200-yard 'fly (2:41.43) and the 400-yard IM (5:23.01); Tanis, who took the 1000-yard 'free (12:20.60), and first-year Alyssa Jeffcoat (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside High), in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.32). Also, the 200 medley relay team – Loewe, Herman, senior Shannon Geer (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield High), and MacMurdo – won with a 2:01.20 performance.
Westminster's women travel to Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 11 for a 6 p.m. meet against Chatham University.
