WHEELING, W.Va. - The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Champion Westminster men's golf team is currently in 25
th place out of 37 teams after Day One of the four-day NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Tuesday.
Westminster fired a team score of 314 (+30) in the first round at the par-71, 6,857-yard Speidel Jones Course at Oglebay Resort. The championship field will be cut to the top-18 teams and the top six individuals (who aren't on one of those 18 teams) at the conclusion of the second round tomorrow. Westminster is currently six strokes back of the projected cut-line, set at 24-over par after day one.
Westminster was led by junior
Michael Bell (Canonsburg, PA / Peters Township) and sophomore
Calen Cummins (Allison Park, PA / Hampton), who each fired rounds in the 70's. Bell carded a four-over par round of 76, highlighted by a birdie on the par-four, 378-yard 13
th hole, while Cummins posted a 77 (+5), boosted by two birdies on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-3 11
th hole. Bell is tied for 48th place in the 191-player field while Cummins is tied for 65th place.
Titan senior
Jonny Stuckert (Pittsburgh, PA / North Hills) finished his day with a round of 80 (+9), as he also birdied the par-3, 198-yard 11
th hole. Stuckert is currently tied for 108
th place. Graduate transfer
Brendan Shaughnessy (Canonsburg, PA / Bishop Canevin) rounded out the counting scores for the Titans after he came into the clubhouse with a round of 81 (+10) and is tied for 123
rd. Sophomore
Sam Napper (Mt Pleasant, PA / Mt Pleasant) concluded the day for Westminster with a score of 82 (+11) to sit tied for 135
th.
Westminster will be back on the course tomorrow for the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament when Napper tees off at 11 a.m.
