Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Win First Game of Season at Bethany

BETHANY, W.V. - The Westminster College men's lacrosse team defeated the Bethany Bison in their first away game of the young season on Saturday by a score of 16-7.
 
Westminster (1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early over Bethany (1-1) with back-to-back goals at the 12-minute mark, courtesy of sophomore Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster) and junior Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional). The Bison scored their first goal at the 8:23 mark and only scored one more goal in the frame. The Titans scored two more goals in the quarter, courtesy of sophomore Boyd Foster (Lincoln, RI / Lincoln) and another goal by Rosa, to end the frame to extend the Titans' lead to 4-2 at the end of one.
 
The Titans deposited the first three goals of the second quarter (one by senior Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) and two by sophomore Ryan Greer (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley)) to further increase their lead to 7-2 before Bethany snapped the scoring run with a goal (4:16). Westminster outscored Bethany 4-1 for the remainder of the half and led 11-4 at halftime. At intermission, Greer led all scorers with four goals, while first-year Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny) had a game-high two assists.
 
In the second half, Bethany scored the first goal of the frame, before three consecutive goals by Westminster extended its commanding lead to 14-5 to end the third. The Titans and Bison each scored two more goals to wrap up the fourth frame, ending in a solid 16-7 victory for the Titans.
 
Greer led Westminster with a game- and career high five goals. Rosa and sophomore Rylan Darrenkamp (Birdsboro, PA / Daniel Boone) followed with three goals each (career-high for Darrenkamp), while Fisher had a pair of goals.
 
On the defensive end, O'Malley led with a game-high twelve ground balls, while junior Andrew Phillips (Morgantown, WV / University) earned a game-best four caused turnovers.
 
Titan first-year goalkeeper Devon Harrity (Hummelstown, PA / Lower Dauphin) earned the win in his first collegiate start, earning two saves in 30 minutes of work.
 
Westminster will be back in action on Saturday, March 13 when it travels to Saint Vincent for a 1 p.m. matchup.
