LATROBE, Pa. - The Westminster College men's lacrosse team defeated the Saint Vincent College Bearcats on the road Saturday by a score of 9-8 in triple overtime.
Westminster won the game when junior
Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) scored an unassisted goal on a diving shot with 1:36 left in the third overtime frame.
Saint Vincent (2-1) jumped out to a 2-1 lead early over Westminster (2-1) within the first ten minutes. The Titans scored their first goal at the 12:19 mark of the first period courtesy of sophomore
Ryan Greer (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) who received a pass from first-year
Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, PA / North Allegheny). The Titans scored one more goal in the quarter, off the stick of first-year
Payton Waight (Ithaca, NY / Ithaca) (which was assisted by Greer), to end the frame and narrow the Bearcats' lead to 3-2 at the end of one.
The Titans deposited three goals in the second quarter, with one by sophomore
Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster), one by senior
Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) and one by Greer to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. At intermission, Greer led all scorers with two goals, while
Greer, O'Malley, and sophomore Boyd Foster (Lincoln, RI / Lincoln) each had a game-high two assists.
In the second half, three consecutive goals by Westminster extended its lead to 7-4 to end the third. The Bearcats rallied and led 8-7 with six minutes to play in the fourth. However, Waight's second goal was a clutch one as his score in the fifth minute knotted the game at 8 and eventually forced overtime.
After the first two overtime periods ended with no winner, sophomore
Connor Doyle (Glen Aubrey, NY / Glen Aubrey) made a crucial save in the third overtime frame, giving Westminster an opportunity to win the game, which Rosa did on the very next possession.
Greer, Waight, and Rosa led Westminster, tying a game-high with two goals each.
On the defensive end, Doyle led with a game-high ten ground balls and notched a career-high 16 saves. First-years
Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park), and
Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, MD / Loyola Blakefield) and seniors
Jack Granahan (Aldie, VA / John Champe) and
Romano Veneziano (Pittsburgh, PA / Pittsburgh Online Academy), each earned one caused turnover.
Westminster will be back in action on Wednesday, March 17 at home against Chatham University for a 7 p.m. matchup.
