PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team lost, 17-9, to Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference match at a neutral site at Duquesne University's Rooney Field on Sunday.
Lebanon Valley (1-1) started the game with a 3-0 lead with six minutes left in the first quarter. Sophomore Hamish Mathwin (Marion, Australia / Westminster) put the first goal on the scoreboard for Westminster (0-3) at the 4:40 mark. The Titans cut LVC's lead to 4-2 when junior Nick Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) found senior Austin Vanderhoof (Chardon, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School) for the score with a minute left in the opening quarter. The Dutchmen led 5-2 at the end of one. LVC outscored the Titans in the second half, 7-2, and led 12-4 at halftime. Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter and the score was 14-6 in favor of the Dutchmen after three quarters of play. LVC started the fourth with three-straight goals, however, Westminster finished strong with three-straight scores of its own.
Senior Chris Slater (Plum, PA / Central Catholic) led Westminster in points with three (two assists and a goal). Mathwin and sophomore Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) each had a team-high two goals.
LVC held a slight advantage in shots-on-goal, 30-25. Westminster led in ground balls (37-33) and face offs (15-14). Both teams were scoreless in extra-man opportunities. Titan sophomore Bennett Webster (Penfield, NY / Penfield) tied a match-high with five ground balls, while first-year Kyle Hoeflich (New Windsor, MD / Francis Scott Key) registered a match-high two caused turnovers.
Westminster is back on the field Saturday, Feb. 29 with a home game versus non-conference foe the University of Mount Union with a 1 p.m. start time.
