NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team lost, 14-9, to the University of Mount Union in non-conference action at home Saturday afternoon.
Junior Shane Fisher (Palm Harbor, FL / East Lake) led the Titans with four points (two goals and two assists). Classmate Nick Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) followed with three points (two assists and a goal).
Westminster (0-4) took an early 1-0 lead when Trella found Fisher for the goal one minute into the first quarter. After two goals by Mount Union (2-2), Fisher responded with his second goal of the game at the 4:33 mark, tying the game at 2. Both teams traded goals (Trella scored for Westminster) and the game was tied at 3 after one.
The Purple Raiders scored two-straight goals in the second quarter and led 5-3. Sophomore Joe Rosa (Newton, NJ / Kittatinny Regional) answered as he put one in the net for the Titans, however, Mount Union finished the first half with two-straight goals and led 7-4 at halftime.
Mount Union continued its scoring in the third quarter with two consecutive goals and led 9-4, its largest lead of the game, with 11:24 on the clock. The Titans strung two-straight together, courtesy of Rosa and senior Dante Serra (Center Valley, PA / Southern Lehigh), cutting Mount Union's lead to 9-6 with just under six minutes on the clock. The Purple Raiders scored the last goal of the frame, taking a four-goal lead into the final quarter.
Westminster got within three points of Mount Union's lead twice in the fourth, with the latest coming with 7:54 to play courtesy of a goal by senior Chris Slater (Plum, PA / Central Catholic), however that would be the closest the Titans would get for the remainder of the contest.
Titan freshman goalkeeper freshman Connor Doyle (Glen Aubrey, NY / Whitney Point) collected a game-high nine ground balls, to go along with six saves, in a complete-game effort. Rosa, junior Jack Granahan (Aldie, VA / John Champe) and senior Michael Hamiche (Victor, NY / Victor) all led the team with two caused turnovers. Senior Ryan Stiemly (Edgewood, MD / Edgewood) tied Fisher and Rosa for a team-high two goals.
The Titans will next play at Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 3 at 4 p.m.
