Women’s Basketball: Second Half Run Lifts Titans Over Bison at Home

Written by Mike Boucher

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany College by a score of 59-46 at home Wednesday evening.

Westminster (13-3, 6-1 PAC) jumped ahead of Bethany (3-12, 2-4 PAC) with a 10-0 run to start the game, capped off by a layup by senior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt). The Titans led 22-8 at the end of one. The Bison outscored the Titans 19-11 in the second quarter to cut the Westminster lead to 33-27 at halftime. Westminster held Bethany to six points in the third quarter and utilized a three-pointer from first-year Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) to close out the quarter to take a 46-33 lead. The Titans held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Bethany got within single digits with a 4-0 run to start the fourth, but that would be the closest it would get to catching the Titans.

Westminster shot 45.5% (20-44) from the field and 38.1% (8-21) from beyond the arc, while Bethany had a 31.8% (14-44) field goal percentage and was 30.8% (4-13) from three. Westminster also shot 78.6% (11-14) from the charity stripe. The Bison bested the Titans on the glass, 32-25. Westminster forced a season-best 27 turnovers and scored 23 points off of those miscues.

The Titans had six players with eight points in the contest. Senior Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) notched eight points, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and recorded a game-high five blocks. Junior Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) tallied eight points and dished out a game-high four assists, while shooting a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Hergenrother and first-year Natalie Murrio (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) each notched eight points. Murrio also tied Fromknecht for a game-high with three steals. Bennett and sophomore Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) each contributed eight points, while Polczynski knocked down a pair of three pointers. Westminster will be back on the court on Saturday, January 18 when it takes on Grove City College on the road in a conference matchup at 1 p.m.
