GROVE CITY, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College by a score of 53-49 on the road Saturday afternoon.
 
Westminster (14-3, 7-1 PAC) got out to a lead over Grove City (13-2, 5-2 PAC) by a score of 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. Senior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) pushed the Titans ahead with eight points in the period and made her first four shot attempts. Despite a 4-0 run to start the quarter by the Wolverines, Westminster battled back and held a 27-24 lead going into intermission. In the third, Grove City outscored the Titans 19-10 and grabbed its second-largest lead of the game at 43-37 going into the fourth quarter.  In the fourth, Westminster rattled off a 7-0 run to start the period, capped off by a three-pointer by first-year Camden Hergenrother (Salem, OH / Cardinal Mooney) to reclaim the lead at 44-43 with 4:35 to play. The Titans extended their lead to 49-45 with 2:49 remaining. The Titans led 51-49 with 19 seconds remaining before Grove City burned a timeout and had possession with a chance to tie the game. The Wolverines turned the ball over on a backcourt violation and senior Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) split two free throws. However, senior Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) grabbed a crucial offensive rebound on the second free throw attempt to essentially seal the victory for Westminster.
 
Westminster shot 39.6% (19-48) from the field, while Grove City had a 30.6% (19-62) field goal percentage. Westminster also shot 72.2% (13-18) from the charity stripe. The Wolverines bested the Titans on the glass, 39-37. Westminster forced 19 turnovers and scored 15 points off of those miscues.
 
Bennett led the way with 16 points off of an 8-11 mark from the field. Bennett also tallied three blocks and grabbed a pair of steals. Fromknecht and junior guard Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) each were in double figures with 10 points. Fromknecht and Greaves each recorded five and four rebounds, respectively. Gage and sophomore Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) each tallied six points, while Gage recorded a team-high six rebounds and tallied a game- and career-high four blocks.
 
Westminster will be back on the court on Saturday, January 25 when it takes on Chatham University at home in a conference matchup at 1:30 p.m.
