NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College football team remained undefeated with a 42-14 win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent College at home on Saturday afternoon.
Westminster (3-0, 2-0 PAC), who was leading 21-14 with five minutes left in the third quarter, scored 21 unanswered in the fourth for the convincing conference win.
Westminster took a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter following a five-yard touchdown run by senior
Tyler Greene (Carlisle, PA / Carlisle), who bounced outside for the score, capping off a 9-play, 55-yard drive.
In the second quarter, Titan sophomore
Ian Barr (State College, PA / State College Area) halted the Bearcats' ensuing drive with the first interception of his career, setting up Westminster at its own 49-yard line. Five plays later, senior
Keano Grice (Delray Beach, FL / West Boca Raton) found the end zone, bobbing and weaving through the Bearcat defense from 19 yards out, extending Westminster's lead to 14-0 with 11:23 left.
Saint Vincent (0-2, 0-1 PAC) got on the scoreboard in the final minutes of the first half with a two-yard rush by Mike Stasko.
Westminster wasted no time adding to its lead in the opening drive of the second half as sophomore
Cole Konieczka (Coraopolis, PA / Moon Area) found freshman tight end
Damon Maul (Portage, PA / Cambria Heights) for a seven-yard touchdown pass on 3
rd down, capping off a 5-play, 69-yard drive.
The Bearcats took advantage of short field position after Westminster was pinned deep in its own territory and had to punt. Saint Vincent only needed one play (a 25-yard pass from Brady Walker to Keith Kalp) to get within one touchdown (21-14) of the Titans' lead with 5:17 left in the third quarter.
It was all Titans in the fourth quarter with three-straight scoring drives. Grice scored his second touchdown of the day, this time from 17 yards out. Senior
Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Konieczka, eclipsing a game- and season-high 120 yards on the day. Corner back turned wide receiver senior
Dwayne Brown (Richmond Heights, OH / Richmond Heights) scored the final Westminster touchdown with a 13-yard grab in the corner of the end zone. Brown set career-highs in receptions (5) and receiving yards (63).
Greene, who came into today's game tied 11
th in Division III in rushing touchdowns, extended his career-high with a team-high fourth running score of the 2019 season. Konieczka went 13-of-21 for 232 yards and three touchdown throws. Grice led on the ground with 79 yards, while tying a career-high with a game-best two rushing touchdowns. Greene totaled 68 yards on the ground.
Titan sophomore
Bryce Thomas (Saint Marys, GA / Camden County) led the defense as he tied a career-high with a game-high 10 tackles, including a career- and game-high two tackles for a loss. Senior
Darius Doty (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg-Salem) and senior
Paul Gonzalez (Miami, FL / Florida Christian) both had five tackles. Doty and senior
Joey Lane (Frederick, MD / Oakdale) each had a sack. Sophomore
Vincent Giles (Lexington Park, MD / Great Mills) picked off a pass in the end zone and returned it 86 yards, setting up Westminster's final score. Giles just missed earning the second interception return for a touchdown of his young career.
Westminster will hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to Bethany College for a PAC contest at 7 p.m.
