Women’s Basketball: Titans Compete Against Bethany on Senior Day

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 58-50, to Bethany College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
 
There were five lead changes in the first quarter with the last one coming at 8-7 in favor of Bethany (12-11, 7-7 PAC) with 3:48 left. The Bison held a slight, 12-11 lead at the end of one. Bethany, who maintained the lead in the second quarter, had its largest lead of the half with a 27-20 lead with 1:08 left and led 27-23 at halftime. Westminster (8-16, 6-9 PAC) outscored the Bison 19-10 in the third quarter, while taking its first lead (38-37) since early in the first quarter, and led 42-37 at the end of three. In the fourth quarter, Bethany opened with a 21-4 run in the first 7:10 minutes and took a commanding 58-46 lead which prove too much to overcome for the Titans.
 
Junior Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led the Titan offense with 14 points. Junior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) scored 13 points. Fromknecht and Bennett each had a team-high eight rebounds and both dished out a team-best three assists. Fromknecht also had a game-high four blocks. Junior Francesca Sicari (Erie, PA / McDowell) added six points. Junior Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) added five rebounds and two points. First-year Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) had five points, to go along with four rebounds. Sophomore Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) also had five points. Sicari and Polczynski each pocketed a steal.
 
Westminster outshot Bethany, 39.1% (18-46) to 32.3% (21-65). The Bison held a slight, 38-37 advantage in rebounds.
 
The Titans honored their seniors Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) and Casey Spieler (Freedom, PA / Freedom) before the game. The Titans also hosted their Play 4Kay Cancer Awareness game, to raise money for scientific research and to assist the efforts to fight against women's cancers for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
           
The Titans will close out the regular season at Grove City College on Wednesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m.
