GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 66-54, at Grove City College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday evening in their final regular season game.
Grove City (15-9, 10-5 PAC) was first on the scoreboard and Westminster (8-17, 6-10 PAC) answered on the next possession, but Grove City would then gain and hold a lead for most of the first quarter - with the largest lead being six points (15-9) with 2:22 left. Westminster would quickly tie the game with 52 seconds left thanks to three-pointers from junior
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) and sophomore
Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau). Grove City scored to end the quarter up 17-15. The Wolverines would hold their lead for the entire second quarter, leading by as much as eight three different points, including the end of the half (33-25).
In the third, the Titans cut into the Wolverines' lead multiple times, even tying the game (42-42) with 4:07 left in the quarter after a three-pointer by first-year
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin). Grove City ended the quarter with a 7-0 run and led 49-42. Grove City led by at least three for the rest of the game; Westminster stayed within striking range, down six (59-53) with 3:15 left, but the Wolverines outscored the Titans 7-1 in the final three minutes to hold the lead.
Junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) scored a game-high 20 points on 7-on-10 shooting, including a game- and career-high three three-pointers. Fromknecht also brought down a team-best nine rebounds and recorded a game-high three blocks. Gage also scored double-digit points with 15 points. Gage was perfect on free-throws (8-8), which tied for fifth-best in school history among those who have been 100% from the charity stripe in a game, and recorded six rebounds (including a team-high three offensive rebounds). Greaves finished with a game-high four assists and a team-high steals.
Grove City outshot Westminster, 39.1% (27-69) to 37.2% (16-43) and outrebounded Westminster, 42-34.
The Titans will next compete in the PAC Tournament with the date and opponent to be determined.
