WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 93-65, at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter consisted of eight lead changes (six of which happened in the first three minutes of the game) with the last one occurring when Titan senior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) converted on a traditional three-point play, to put Westminster (7-13, 5-6 PAC) up, 14-13, with 3:13 on the clock, The Titans maintained their lead and were in front, 23-17 at the end of one. Waynesburg (6-13, 4-7 PAC) regained the lead, 28-27, with a three-pointer by Erin Joyce with 7:37 on the clock in the second. The Yellow Jackets would not trail for the remainder of the half. Waynesburg led 46-38 with 1:20 remaining; however, the Titans finished the first half strong with a 6-0 run, four of the points courtesy of sophomore
Ashley Russell (Belle Vernon, PA / Belle Vernon), to cut Waynesburg's halftime lead to 46-44.
The Titans took a 48-46 lead after a layup by first-year
Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) early in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead and outscored the Titans 26-9 for the remainder of the quarter and led 72-57 at the end of three. Waynesburg maintained its double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.
Mathews led the Titans with 18 points (second personal highest this year), including a game-high four three-pointers. Mathews has now made four threes in a game three times this year. Junior
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) also scored in double-figures for the Titans with 12 points. Russell registered a career-high nine points. Juniors
Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) and
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) each had seven points. Fromknecht led Westminster on the glass with seven rebounds, to go along with team-highs in assists (4) and blocks (1). Bennett added five boards. Polczynski added six points and tied with sophomore
Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) for a team-high two steals.
Waynesburg outshot Westminster, 50.7% (35-69) to 37.5% (24-64) and outrebounded the Titans, 45-34.
Westminster will next host Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday, January 30 at 6 p.m.
