Women’s Basketball: Mathews Ties School Record in Threes in Titan Loss Against W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 80-68, at home against Washington & Jefferson College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday night.

Washington & Jefferson (14-6, 10-2 PAC) started the game with a 6-0 lead with 8:15 on the clock. Westminster (7-14, 5-7 PAC) responded with a 16-9 run to take its first lead of the game, 16-15, after junior Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) found first-year Magen Polczynski (Irwin, PA / Norwin) for a three-pointer with 1:58 on the clock. During the run, senior Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) scored half of Westminster's points with eight. The Titans held a slight, 18-17, lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, the Titans took their largest lead of the game of five points twice, with the latest one coming with 5:51 left after junior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) made a layup to put the Titans up 28-23. The Presidents answered with a 12-2 run and led 35-30 with 1:06 remaining. W&J held a 36-33 halftime lead.

The Presidents outscored the Titans, 25-13, in the third and led 61-46 at the end of three. W&J held a twenty-point, 71-51 lead with 6:27 left in the game. The Titans, however, orchestrated a 17-5 run to cut the Presidents' lead to eight (76-68) with 1:21 left. That, however, would be the closest Westminster would get for the remainder of the contest.

Mathews tied a school record with six threes, while scoring a career-high 24 points. Junior Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) and junior Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) also scored in double-digits for the Titans with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Mathews and Fromknecht led Westminster in rebounds with five each. Mathews also tied a game- and career-high with four steals. Sophomore Alazia Greaves (West Sunbury, PA / Moniteau) led the Titans with six assists.

W&J outshot Westminster, 51.9% (28-54) to 44.8% (26-58) and outrebounded the Titans, 32- 29.

The Titans will next host Saint Vincent College Saturday, February 2 at 1:30 p.m.
