WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Waynesburg University on Sunday.
The Titans won game one, 4-3, in 10 innings, and lost game two, 8-4, in the nightcap.
In game one, Westminster (8-7, 3-3 PAC) took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Junior
Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) scored the first run with a double and would cross the plate, one batter later, for the second run off a Waynesburg error. Junior
Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) scored the third run with a double. Waynesburg (5-17, 1-7 PAC), finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning off the bat of Justin Buberl, who connected on a two-run single. The Yellow Jackets forced extra innings after Mitch Nordstrom hit an RBI-single in the ninth, tying the game at 3. In the top of the 10th inning, junior
Dante Parente (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) registered a two-out RBI-single, bringing home sophomore
Tyler Barnot (Pittsburgh, PA / Bethel Park), for the game-winning hit. Titan junior
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) improved to 2-0 on the season, after pitching two innings of relief. Johnson gave up one run on three hits, while striking out three and walking one. Senior
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) started the game and pitched 8.0 innings and gave up two runs on eight hits, while striking out six batters and walking none, in the no decision.
In game two, Salmen tied the game, 2-2, after a two-run single in the fourth inning. The Titans took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, after junior
Ernie Burkes (New Castle, PA / Neshannock) scored on a Yellow Jacket error. Waynesburg regained its lead (6-3) in the seventh with four runs. Westminster managed to score a run in the eighth, however, was unable to score any additional runs despite having runners on second and third with only one out. The Yellow Jackets responded with two runs in the bottom half. Titan junior pitcher
Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) (3-2) went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits. Pullen struck out four and walked eight.
The Titans will next play Penn State DuBois in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 11, starting at 6 p.m.
