NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent Washington & Jefferson College at home on Saturday afternoon.
Westminster (18-5, 9-0 PAC) defeated Washington & Jefferson (6-14, 2-6 PAC) in game one, 1-0, and, 7-3, in game two. The Titans extended their winning streak to 16 games, a number good for third in school history. Westminster won 17 games in a row in 2001 and 19 games consecutively in 2016.
In game one, Westminster senior
Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) drove in the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning with a single to right field. Senior
Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) held the Presidents to just two hits, pitching a complete-game and striking out 11 batters for her 14th win of the season. Senior
Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) went 2-for-3 with one run and a double.
In game two, W&J scored first with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Titans answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs (3-2), courtesy of Dieterich scoring on an Owrey stolen base attempt and a double by Rohrer. In the bottom of the third, junior
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) singled to right center, bringing in Dieterich to tie the game at three. Later in the inning, senior
Courtney Cohen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) drove in Owrey with a groundball to the shortstop, giving Westminster a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Dieterich doubled to left center, scoring senior
Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) for a 5-3 Titan lead. Two innings later, Dieterich again used her bat to drive in two more runs, extending the Titan lead, 7-3. Sophomore
Kayla Troxil (Canfield, OH / Canfield) started the game, pitching one inning. Ritter pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up just four hits and striking out three. Rohrer relieved Ritter in the bottom of the fifth, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out five. Ritter (3-2) earned her third win of the season.
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, April 18 on the road for a doubleheader at PAC foe Chatham University. Game one is set for 6:30 p.m.
