Written by Nick Macdonald

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Westminster College softball team swept the competition on Friday afternoon, defeating Rhodes College, 5-3, and beating Bluffton University, 9-5, in the last day of the D9 Sunkissed Games.

Westminster finished with a 5-5 record for the tournament. After starting 2-5, the Titans head home on a three-game winning streak.

In game one, Westminster got on the board first off the bat of first-year Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn) in the top half of the first inning. Two innings later, Tetirick drove in another run with a double to center field to give the Titans a 2-0 lead. In the first four innings, senior pitcher Jazymn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) struck out seven batters, four of which went down looking. In the top of the fourth, senior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) doubled to left center, bringing in a run. Two batters later, junior Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) reached on a fielder's choice, driving in a run in the process. Rohrer then singled to left, scoring Liverman and giving Westminster a 5-0 cushion. Rhodes (11-4) got its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth and made it interesting in the bottom half of the seventh by scoring two runs and having the chance to tie with two outs. Rohrer, however, struck out Lynx's Samantha Feinstein to end the game. Tetirick finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Rohrer went 2-for-4 with two hits, and pitched a complete-game, giving up two earned runs and tying a career-high in strikeouts with 12.

In game two, Westminster scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rohrer earned three RBIs while Tetirick earned two. Bluffton (2-7) answered with two runs of its own in the top of the second, reducing the Titan lead to 6-2. After blanking Westminster in the bottom half of the second, Bluffton scored three more runs in the top of the third, trailing by just one run (6-5) after three. In the bottom of the fourth, senior Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) doubled down the right field line to bring in Liverman to give the Titans a 7-5 advantage. Three batters later, senior Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) doubled to left center field, her second of the day, adding another insurance RBI for Westminster. Anderson would later hit a RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth (9-5) and the Titans would hold off Bluffton the rest of the way. Anderson finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore Kayla Troxil (Canfield, OH / Canfield) started the game and pitched 2.1 innings. Rohrer improved to 5-1 after coming in for relief. Rohrer pitched 4.2 innings, while giving up no hits, no runs, and striking out seven.

The Titans will next play Saturday, March 17 against Hiram College in a non-conference doubleheader for their home-opener. The first game is set for 1 p.m.
