NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team defeated non-conference opponent Hiram College, 3-2, in game one and extended its winning streak to five games with a 2-0 victory in game two in its home-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
In game one, Hiram (4-8) got on the board early with two home runs in the top of the first inning, making the score 2-0. Westminster (7-5) answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a RBI-double to center field from senior
Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview), bringing in one run and closing the gap, 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth, junior
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) hit a double of her own, bringing in senior
Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) and tying the game at two. After a one-two-three inning from the Terriers in the top of the sixth, senior
Courtney Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) drove in her sister senior
Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) with a single to center field in the bottom of the sixth, giving Westminster a 3-2 lead. Senior
Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) pitched her way out of the seventh, giving the Titans the 3-2 victory. Rohrer pitched a complete-game, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven batters. Liverman finished 1-for-2 with one RBI, one walk, and a stolen base.
In game two, Ritter pitched a complete-game-two-hitter. Westminster scored the first run (1-0) of the game off the bat of senior
Courtney Cohen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington), who grounded out to second base, but drove in A. Dieterich in the process. In the bottom of the sixth, A. Dieterich homered to left field, giving Ritter and the Titans an insurance run to lead, 2-0. Ritter, who had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings, struck out the potential tying run for the last out in the top of the seventh, securing the victory. Ritter struck out two and earned her first win of the season. A. Dieterich went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Senior
Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) drew two walks and swiped two bases for the game.
Westminster is back in action Monday, March 19 with a non-conference doubleheader against Penn State Behrend. The matchup, which was moved from Wednesday, March 21, will start at 3:30 p.m.
