Softball: Titans Split in Day One of D9 Sunkissed Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Westminster College softball team split its first two games of the season in the D9 Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Westminster topped Penn State Berks, 2-1, in game one and fell to Heidelberg University 10-2 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions of Penn State Berks (1-1) scored first in the opening inning off a double down the right field line by Ashley Malek. Westminster (1-1) answered in the bottom half of the first inning when junior Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) hit an RBI-single to bring in senior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) and make the score 1-1. In the bottom of the fifth, senior Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) reached on an error and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lauren McNany (Emlenton, PA / Allegheny-Clarion Valley). Senior Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) drove in Anderson with an RBI-double to left center field, giving the Titans a 2-1 lead. Westminster held that lead the rest of the way. Senior pitcher Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and giving up just two hits.

In game two, Westminster took an early two run lead in the top of the first after an RBI-double by Liverman and a fielder's choice by Rohrer. Heidelberg (1-0), however, answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the first and went on to defeat the Titans, 10-2, in five innings. First-year catcher Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn) went 3-for-3 in her first collegiate game. Liverman finished one for two with one RBI and a walk.

The Titans next play Monday, March 5 against Defiance College at 1:30 p.m. and Illinois College at 6 p.m.
