Softball: Titans Blank Defiance, Fall to Illinois College in Day Two of Sunkissed Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Westminster College softball team defeated Defiance College, 8-0, in five innings and fell to Illinois College, 5-1, on Monday.

In game one, Westminster (2-1) shutout Defiance College (3-1) 8-0 in five innings. Titan senior Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) pitched a complete-game-two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. First-year Breanna Tetirick (New Concord, OH / John Glenn) kept her batting average at 1.000 as she went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, two of which came in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 tie. Senior Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) also went three for 3-for-3 with three hits and drove in one run in the third inning. Senior Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) capped off the third inning with a two-RBI-single to give the Titans a 5-0 lead. In the fourth inning, junior Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in senior Courtney Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) and make the score 6-0. Tetirick singled to center field, driving in senior Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) in the process and expanding the Titan lead, 7-0. First-year Leigha Knox (Aliquippa, PA / Central Valley) singled in her first collegiate at-bat, driving in A. Dieterich and winning the game, 8-0. Liverman finished 1-for-2 with a double and RBI, Westfall went 2-for-3 with two hits, and Anderson finished 2-for-2 with two hits and two RBIs.

In the nightcap game, Westminster (2-2) took an early lead after Tetirick hit a single down the left field line, scoring senior Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango). Illinois College (1-3) answered with five unanswered runs, including two in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom half of the third. Illinois would go on to win, 5-1. Liverman finished 1-for-2 with one hit and a walk, while Tetirick finished 1-for-3 with one hit and one RBI.

Westminster is back on the field Tuesday, March 6 as it continues the D9 Sunkissed Games. Game one will be against Muskingum University at 11:15 a.m., and the second game will be against Lebanon Valley College at 3:45 p.m.
