Men’s Soccer: Iregui Breaks Single-Season Goal Record as Titans Defeat Carlow

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Carlow University, 7-1, at home on Wednesday evening.

Westminster improved to 12-4 on the season, while Carlow fell to 4-12.

Sophomore Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) opened the scoring for the Titans in the 21st minute, giving Westminster an early 1-0 lead. Junior Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) found Iregui down the right side of the field, and Iregui kicked it in with an open net to score. Iregui's goal broke the Westminster single-season goal scoring record, as he now has 16 on the year. The record was previously held by Iregui in 2017 and Bill Van Ormer in 1996. Just three minutes later, Iregui found freshman Logan Mannheimer (South Park, PA / South Park) to make it a 2-0 game. At the 30th minute, freshman Marc Esqueda (San Bruno, CA / Junipero Serra) scored his first goal of the season (assisted from Iregui), giving the Titans a 3-0 cushion. Before halftime at the 41st minute mark, freshman Zac Marzula (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) found classmate Jimmy Boyle (Pittsburgh, PA / Chartiers Valley) for his first score of the season, making it a 4-0 game.

One minute into the second half, the Titans earned a goal off an own goal by the Celtics (5-0). Just five minutes later (51:35), Mannheimer scored his second goal of the game, increasing the Titan lead, 6-0. Carlow added a goal of their own in the 72nd minute (6-1). Senior Justin Brandt (Ellicott City, MD / Archbishop Spalding) connected with the back of the net in the 85th minute for his third goal of the season and to give Westminster a six goal, 7-1 lead.

The Titans led in shots (20-6) and corner kicks (4-0).

Westminster is back in action Saturday, October 27 on the road at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
