GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Westminster College men's soccer team lost, 3-2, at Grove City College in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action on Saturday in its final regular season game.
The Titans dropped to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference, while the Wolverines improved to
13-1-4 overall and 6-0-1 in the league. Saturday's game determined the first seed for the PAC Tournament.
Grove City jumped out a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals by Franklin Tropiano (07:20) and Christian Caporaso (16:05) in the first half.
Westminster cut the Wolverines' lead in half after freshman
Marc Esqueda (San Bruno, CA / Junipero Serra) found the back of the net in the 36
th minute for his second goal of the year. Junior
Peter Mattocks (Saegertown, PA / Saegertown) earned the assist, his sixth of the season.
In the second half, sophomore
Nick Iregui (Gig Harbor, WA / Charles Wright Academy) tied the game, 2-2, in the 55
th minute with his team-leading 17
th goal of the year, extending his own school record for most goals in a single season.
Five minutes later, the Wolverines scored the game-winner at the 60:21 mark when Christian Caporaso found Trent Strick for the goal.
Titan senior goalkeeper
AJ Bove (New Stanton, PA / Hempfield Area) gathered in a save in 90 minutes of play.
Westminster outshot Grove City, 16-15, including 7-5 on goal. The Wolverines had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Titans have clinched the second seed in this year's PAC Tournament and will host a Semifinal game on Tuesday. The time and opponent have not been officially released.
