Volleyball: Titans Defeat Frostburg State, 3-2; Move On To ECAC Semifinals

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Westminster College volleyball team defeated Frostburg State, 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25,15-7) in the first round of the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) DIII Volleyball Championship Saturday afternoon.
 
Titan senior Kendell Dickson (Cochranton, PA / Cochranton) led the defense with a match-and career-high 29 digs. Titan senior Lexie Yoho (Pittsburgh, PA / Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) led the Westminster offense with 18 kills and a .425 hitting percentage. Yoho added a match-high nine blocks. Junior Delaney Saxton (Cortland, OH / Brookfield) had 14 kills and sophomore Reilly DeGeorge (Ashtabula, OH / Saint John) finished with 12. Junior Rachel Moore (Greensburg, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) had 26 digs. Junior Shanna Daniels (Hermitage, PA / Billy C. Ryan) earned a team-high 21 assists, while junior Ashley Barker (Warren, PA / Warren Area) totaled 15. Sophomore Haley Farmerie (Manor, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) added four blocks.
 
In set number one, the Bobcats had an early 9-6 lead. Westminster, however, went on a 6-0 run to gain the lead and never looked back, earning the 25-17 first set victory. The Titans jumped out to a 10-4 lead early in the second set, but the Bobcats climbed back with a 7-0 run and took the lead, 11-10. Westminster took a 17-13 lead, but the Bobcats fueled another 6-0 run and went in front 19-17. Frostburg State held on to win the second set, 25-22. Westminster pulled out a 25-22 set three victory that included eight ties and three lead changes. Frostburg answered back with a 25-23 set four victory of their own, leading the Titans and Bobcats into a decisive set five. Westminster opened the fifth set with a 5-1 run and controlled the lead from there, as it defeated the Bobcats, 15-7.
 
Westminster improved to 28-6 overall, while Frostburg fell to 16-12.
 
The Titans will play Marymount University, who was victorious against overall top-seed Arcadia University, in one of the two Semifinals on Sunday, November 12 at 10 AM.
