GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg on Tuesday.
The Titans lost game one, 4-3, in eight innings, but regrouped in game two and won, 7-2.
In game one, senior
Alexis Sheffer (Seneca, PA / Cranberry) put Westminster (24-14) on the scoreboard first with a two-run home run, her first of the season, in the top of the third inning, scoring first-year
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley). Pitt-Greensburg (13-25) took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning, off a two-run double and a one-run single. Liverman singled in junior
Emily Lindsey (Freeport, PA / Freeport) in the seventh inning, to tie the game at 3, forcing extra innings. The Panthers scored the game-winner with a walk-off triple in the bottom of the eighth. Titan sophomore
Courtney Cohen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington) and Liverman each registered a double.
In the second game, the Titans scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth. The Panthers spoiled the shutout with two runs in the third. Sheffer had a game-high three RBIs, while Liverman had two. Sheffer, Liverman, sophomore
Addie Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley), and senior
Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) each had a double, while Lindsey connected on a home run, her first of the season.
Forrest (12-7) got the loss in game one after coming in for relief in the eighth inning, but earned the win in game two. In the win, she gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters and walking none in five innings.
Westminster secured the number one seed and hosting rights for this weekend's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament and will play fourth-seeded Bethany College in the opening round on Friday, May 6 at 12 p.m.
