FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Westminster College baseball team won its first game of the 2016 season, while splitting with Maritime College on the final day of its Florida trip on Friday. The Titans shutout the Privateers in game one, 14-0, and lost, 9-2, in the second game.
Titan senior
Kyle Borton (Mineral Ridge, OH / Mineral Ridge) threw a one-hitter in a complete game effort in the first game. He struck out a career-best 10 batters, while walking three. Westminster scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, and five in the sixth. The Titans tallied 11 total hits, led by senior
Ryan Dunn (Freeport, PA / Freeport) who went 3-for-4, including a team-high three RBIs. Freshman
Luke Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) and sophomore
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) each had two hits.
In game two, freshman
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the second inning with an RBI-single, scoring Rossier. Ferlin put the Titans in front, 2-1, with an RBI in the top of the third, however Maritime (4-1) regained the lead, 5-2, with four runs in the bottom half. The Privateers added three more runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth. For the game, Maritime out-hit Westminster 11-5. Titan freshman
Cody Acon (Industry, PA / Western Beaver) (0-2) pitched 3.2 innings, while giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and walked two.
Westminster (1-8) will next play at the University of Mount Union on Saturday, March 19 in a nonconference doubleheader with game one starting at 1 p.m.
