BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - In its last regular season game of the season, the Westminster College women's basketball team won 52-46 at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Geneva College after coming back from being down 31-21 at halftime.
After the game was tied 4-4 with 15:33 remaining in the first half, Geneva went on an 11-1 run to take a 15-5 lead with eight minutes left. Westminster got within five points (15-10) with 6:59 on the clock, however the Golden Tornadoes regained their double-digit lead and led 31-21 at halftime.
The Titans started the second half with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 38 after a jumper by sophomore Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) at the 9:35 mark. Westminster extended its streak to seven more points after Durbin found first-year Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) for a layup, putting the Titans in front 45-38 with 5:32 remaining. Geneva, however, responded with a 7-0 run and tied the game at 45 with 2:26 on the clock. Westminster answered on its next possession with a three-pointer by senior Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville), putting the Titans back on top 48-45. Westminster held off Geneva for the remainder of the contest.
Senior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) registered her fifth double-double of the season after she scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed down a team-best 12 boards. Borts also pocketed a game- and career-high six steals. Durbin also scored in double-digits for the Titans with 11 points. Grandy and Cook added nine and eight points, respectively. Grandy also had seven rebounds.
For the game, Westminster out-shot Geneva 28.3% (15-53) to 26.7% (12-45). The Golden Tornadoes out-rebounded the Titans 43-37.
Geneva finishes its season at 4-21 overall and 2-16 in the PAC. Westminster (6-19, 5-13 PAC) has secured the seventh seed of the 2014-15 PAC Championship Tournament and will play at the sixth-seeded Bethany College on Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round. The Titans split the season series with the Bison as they won 62-53 at home on January 14 and lost 67-49 at Bethany on February 11. The winner on Monday will play at the no.3-seeded Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Quarterfinals.
The PAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament features a new configuration in 2014-15, as the conference has adopted a double-bye format in which number one seed Thomas More and second-seeded Saint Vincent automatically advance to the semifinal round, which will be hosted by Thomas More at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Friday, February 27.
