STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 78-66, to the College of Staten Island in day one of the 14
th Annual Tournament of Heroes, hosted by Staten Island.
The Dolphins (7-2) led 13-0 with 16:35 remaining in the first half. The Titans (2-7), however, responded with a 7-0 run to cut Staten Island's lead to 13-7 with 13:31 on the clock. Westminster got as close as two points (20-18) with 8:06 remaining after a layup by junior
Cameron Pozsgai (Windham, OH / Windham). The Dolphins maintained their lead and led 42-37 at intermission.
Down 52-43 in the second half, Westminster orchestrated a 9-2 run to get within two points (54-52), following a layup by sophomore
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield), with 11:51 remaining. Staten Island, however, out-scored Westminster 24-14 for the remainder of the game.
Pozsgai led the Titans with a season-high 18 points, while sophomore
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) registered 15 points. Domenick made a career- and game-high five three-pointers. Vrabel and sophomore
Matt Getsy (Mars, PA / Mars) added eight and five points, respectively. Pozsgai was one rebound away from a double-double as he led Westminster with a season-high nine rebounds. Pozsgai added a team-high four assists and tied Vrabel with a team-high two steals. Senior
Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Vrabel tallied five rebounds each. Junior
Coty Gander (Jackson Center, PA / Lakeview) tied a game-high with two blocks.
Westminster will play Connecticut College in the consolation game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Connecticut (5-3) lost to State University of New York at Canton, 85-82, in game one.
