STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Westminster College men's basketball team was unable to hang on to its late lead and lost, 90-80, to Connecticut College in the consolation game of the 14
th Annual Tournament of Heroes on Wednesday night, which is being hosted by the College of Staten Island.
Tied 5-5 early in the first half, the Camels went on a 25-11 run to take a 30-16 lead with 8:43 on the clock. The Titans cut Connecticut's lead to 39-33 after a 17-9 run, capped off by a three-pointer by sophomore
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle), with 2:26 remaining. The Camels maintained their lead and led 45-35 at halftime.
Westminster (2-8) opened the second half with an 18-7 run with 14:53 to play, capped off by a layup by senior
Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin), to take a 53-52 lead, its first since the beginning of the game.
The Titans took their biggest lead of the game, 65-58, after junior
Jason Pilarski (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) connected on a three-pointer with 11:19 on the clock.
Connecticut (6-3) regained the lead, 72-71, with 5:50 to play after Doug Henton scored on a jumper. Westminster got within one point (80-79) following another three by Domenick with 2:16 to play, but the Camels out-scored the Titans 10-1 in the final minutes.
Three Titans scored in double-figures, led by Wallander with a season-high 18 points. Pilarski added 14 points, while junior
Cameron Pozsgai (Windham, OH / Windham) had 12. Domenick and sophomore
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) scored nine points each. Pozsgai led the Titans with eight rebounds, while Scott had seven. Domenick added a team-high five assists. Westminster made a season-high 13 three-pointers, led by Pilarski who tied a career-high with four threes.
The Titans lost 78-66 to Staten Island in day one of the tournament Tuesday night.
Westminster will next play at Saint Vincent College (7-2, 3-0 PAC) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game Saturday, Jan. 2, at 6 p.m.
