PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered an 81-50 setback to Carnegie Mellon University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday.
With the loss, the Titans fall to 1-8 overall. With the win, the Tartans improve to 8-1 overall.
Carnegie Mellon led 20-8 with 11:57 remaining in the first half. The Titans responded with a 13-4 run, capped off with a three pointer by sophomore Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville), which cut the Tartans' lead to 24-21 with 6:42 on the clock. The Tartans remained in front and led 39-27 at intermission.
In the second half, the Titans got within single digits of Carnegie Mellon's lead when senior Allison Borts (Youngstown, OH / Boardman) scored a layup with 17:51 on the clock, bringing the score to 43-35 in favor of Carnegie Mellon. That would be the closest the Titans would get for the remainder of the game.
Carnegie Mellon out-shot Westminster 49.2% (32-65) to 30.5% (18-59) and dominated the glass out-rebounding the Titans 50-26.
First-year Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led the Titans with 11 points while Borts added eight points. Sophomore Shelby Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) dished-out a team-high three assists.
The Titans will host Saint Vincent College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) home opener.
