NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak after a 66-59 win against La Roche College inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
With the win, The Titans improve to 3-6 overall. With the loss, the Redhawks drop to 1-9 overall.
La Roche led 17-11 with 10:34 remaining in the first half. The Titans answered with a 7-0 run to take a 18-17 lead, their first since the opening minute, after junior Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) scored a layup with 6:46 on the clock.
The Redhawks regained the lead when Larry Brodie made a free throw with 4:18 remaining. Westminster, however, quickly regained the lead and was in front 31-26 at halftime.
In the second half, the Titans took their largest lead of the game when sophomore John Arcuri (Oakmont, PA / Saint Joseph) found freshman Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) for a three-pointer with 12:58 on the clock, putting Westminster up 47-32. La Roche kept fighting and eventually cut the Titans' lead to 53-51 with 6:39 remaining. Westminster maintained the lead for the victory.
Wallander led the Titan offense with 18 points, to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore Matt Getsy (Mars, PA / Mars) and freshman Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) also scored in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Arcuri and freshman Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) added nine and eight points, respectively. Vrabel led on the glass with a team-high eight rebounds. Domenick dished-out a game-high seven assists in his Titan debut.
The Titans out-shot the Redhawks 43.1% (25-58) to 42.1% (24-57). La Roche held a 41-37 rebound-advantage.
Westminster is back in action Tuesday, Dec. 30, when it hosts Baldwin Wallace College at 7 p.m.
