NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team opened its 2014-15 season with a 93-81 win over Kenyon College at home in its first of two games of the 23rd annual Buzz Ridl Classic.
Titan junior Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) led all scorers with 27 points. His seven rebounds tied freshman Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) for a team-high. Scott added 20 points with a perfect 9 for 9 from the field in his collegiate debut, becoming only the third Titan ever with a perfect field goal percentage in a single game with at least nine attempts. Booker Newberry was 9 for 9 in 1994 and Craig Paul was 10 for 10 in 1978.
Also scoring in double figures for Westminster were sophomore John Arcuri (Oakmont, PA / Saint Joseph) (14), freshman Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (13), and sophomore Matt Getsy (Mars, PA / Mars) (11). Getsy and Vrabel added six and five rebounds respectively.
The Titans outshot Kenyon, 54.8% (34-62) to 37.9% (25-66). Westminster also held a 41 to 38 rebound advantage.
Westminster will host Penn. State Beaver in its final game of the Buzz Ridl Classic tomorrow at 4 p.m.
