WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 76-73, at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown.
Down 71-61 with 3:36 to play in the game, Westminster (9-8, 6-4 PAC), got within one point (74-73) of Washington & Jefferson's (12-5, 7-3 PAC) lead with 42 seconds to go after Titan senior Hannah Shaffer (Apollo, PA / Apollo-Ridge) sunk a pair a free throws. W&J, however, responded with a jumper to make it a three-point game with 14 seconds on the clock which proved to be too much for Westminster to overcome.
The Presidents were in front for the majority of the first half and took their first double-digit lead when Kara Seamon made a three-pointer with 4:33 to play and gave W&J a 34-22 lead. Washington & Jefferson led 42-28 at halftime.
For the game, W&J out-shot Westminster 44.4% (24-54) to 37.5% (24-64), while slightly out-rebounding the Titans, 39-37.
Seniors Courtney Zitt (Latrobe, PA / Greater Latrobe) and Gabby Holko (Pittsburgh, PA / Mt. Alvernia) led the Titans with 18 points each. Shaffer and junior Jenna Grandy (Sharpsville, PA / Sharpsville) followed with nine points apiece. Shaffer and junior Courtney Klein (York, PA / Red Lion) led on the glass with a game-high 11 rebounds each, while tallying a game-high three blocks apiece. Titan freshman Shelby Brown (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) dished-out a team-high three assists.
Chelsea Apke led Washington & Jefferson with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
Westminster will host Thiel on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
