NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's basketball team could not hold off Grove City as the Titans lost a heartbreaker 69-66. The Titans dropped to 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Wolverines improved to 6-6 overall and 2-3 against league foes.
The Titans had a 26-16 lead with 2:49 left on the clock in the first half after a three-pointer courtesy of junior guard Doug Smith (South Park, Pa./South Park), but Grove City used a 7-2 run to trail 28-23 at intermission.
The Wolverines shot an impressive 68% (17-for-25) from the floor in a back-and-forth second half battle.
Westminster's senior guard Max Spinner (Boca, Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) drained a three pointer to extend the Titan's lead to 66-62 with 2:02 remaining, but the Wolverines answered on the ensuing possession with a three of their own courtesy of J.T. Schwartz.
Grove City converted a turnover into a layup to take a 67-66 lead with 38 seconds remaining. After another late Titans turnover, the Wolverines' Mitch Marmelstein converted two clutch free throws which proved to be the game-clincher.
Smith led Westminster with 21 points and sophomore guard Anthony Thomas (New Castle, Pa./Union) added 18 points. Junior forward Adam Carswell (Painesville, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) had eight points to go along with his game-high 13 rebounds.
Brett Matson led Grove City with 20 points, while Kris Verderber and Mitch Marmelstein added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
Westminster held a 36-30 rebound edge.
Both teams shot similar with the Titans shooting 44%Â (22-for-50) and the Wolverines at 43.3% (26-for-60).
Westminster is at Thomas More on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 3 p.m.
