Men's Basketball: Bearcats Use Game-Ending 17-4 Run to Nip Titans

LATROBE, Pa. - Saint Vincent went on a 17-4 run in the final four minutes to hand the Westminster College men's basketball team a 62-60 loss on the road in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday night.

By absorbing their team-record 17th straight road loss, the Titans fall to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in the PAC, while the Bearcats improve to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the league.

The Bearcats held a pair of two-point leads for 18 seconds in the game, one when they led 4-2 early in the first half and the second came in the final 18 seconds after Dennis Bassich hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to cap off Saint Vincent's comeback.

Westminster missed two 3-pointers on its final two possessions, one came with two seconds left after a calling a timeout with nine seconds left and the other came after Saint Vincent missed a free throw with one second left. 

Junior forward Rob Briggs (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) posted his sixth career double-double for Westminster with a game-high 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, both one shy of career highs.

Freshman guard Kendall Hunter (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored nine points on 4-7 shooting in only 13 minutes of action, while freshman guard Anthony Thomas (New Castle, Pa./Union) bucketed seven points for the Titans to go with a team-high six assists.

Bassich and B.J. McGill led the Bearcats with 13 points apiece. McGill dished out six assists.

Saint Vincent out-rebounded the Titans, 48-34, with three players pulling down at least seven boards.

After leading 36-32 at halftime, the Titans led by as many as 12 points in the second half when they went on a 12-0 run to take a 49-37 lead with 13:24 left. Westminster also led by 12 with 8:40 remaining.

Saint Vincent made its big run when Bassich hit a 3-pointer to cut Westminster's lead to 56-48 with 4:01 on the clock. Bassich then culminated the 17-4 run with 18 seconds left with another 3-pointer.

Westminster hosts Thomas More Saturday at 4 p.m.
